Be mindful.
What is a relapse? Be grateful.
Be positive.
Be true. Be kind.
― Roy T. Bennett
Most symptoms of MS are not life-threatening.
With the availability of effective medications, there is rarely a need for you to visit the
emergency department. Most of your concerns can wait and be taken care of at the
doctor’s clinic the next day.
However, there may be instances you should be taken to the emergency department:
Relapse, usually lasting more than 24 hours
Any exaggeration of symptoms that has been noticed
You should report any symptoms like constipation, chest infections and respiratory
issues, pressure ulcers, difficulty in swallowing, and urinary tract infections
When symptoms are not much pronounced, checking with your doctor before rushing to
the ER helps reduce unnecessary stress.
Symptoms that may suggest a relapse
Eye pain and vision problems such as double vision or jumpy vision
Numbness and tingling
Sensitivity to heat
Pain that runs down the spine, like a mild electrical shock, when you bend your neck
Dizziness
Bowel or bladder problems
Stiff muscles and trouble moving your body
Feeling weak and tired
Problems with balance and coordination
A hard time thinking clearly
