women
Do not be concerned about your ability to conceive. Although it can be a challenging
situation, it does not mean that you cannot have a family if you wish. Many women go on to
have children after diagnosis.
The patients have queries regarding the use of contraceptives, treatment options available
while trying to conceive and during pregnancy.
Questions related to the delivery options available, use of anaesthesia while delivery,
post-delivery relapse, the ability to handle the physical and emotional challenges of
parenting, etc. are required to be clarified by the treating neurologist and gynaecologist. 1,2
Use of Contraceptives
Family planning and the use of contraceptives should be discussed
with your doctor to avoid unplanned pregnancies and to reduce the
exposure of drugs to the fetus.
Fertility
The good news is that MS is not known to affect fertility significantly.
Women with MS go through healthy pregnancies just like anyone else.
Babies born to mothers with MS do not have a significantly different
average gestational age or birth weight compared to mothers without MS.
Risk to the child
MS is not considered to be hereditary, and children of a parent with MS
have a 4% risk of developing the condition themselves. The risk of
developing MS in the general population is 0.2%.
