E ect of Pregnancy
Pregnancy does not speed up or worsen the symptoms of MS. In fact,
it may have beneficial effects on the mother’s health. It is noted that
women with MS tend to experience fewer relapses during pregnancy,
this is more evident in the third trimester. There are newer drugs that
help women to be able to enter pregnancy in a well-controlled
disease state and decrease their risk of a relapse after delivery.
Tiredness
As a new mother with MS, tiredness may require some adjusting and
management. If you are going to be a mother soon or are a new
mother, seek support around the first few months. Get plenty of rest!
Use of MS medication during pregnancy
Speak to your doctor about the best treatment options that can be
taken during pregnancy. within case of severe MS, the decision to
continue with a medication despite the risks will be made by your
doctor.
Contraceptives
You should consider contraceptives based on how safe and effective
the drug is. Your doctor will let you know what is best for you.
Care during pregnancy and delivery
You will not require any specific gynecologic care during pregnancy.
Labour and delivery are often the same as in other women. Most
forms of anesthesia are considered safe and well-tolerated, your
doctor may be able to decide what is best for you.
Breastfeeding
For women taking MS treatments, breastfeeding should be discussed
with your doctor. It is best to educate yourself and be well prepared to
go through this exciting phase of life. A healthy diet, including foods
that are high in vitamin D, is highly recommended. Vitamin D affects
the immune system and helps regulate cell growth.
